Open-Water Swim Safety for Triathletes: A Water-Quality Decision Guide

Why triathletes have a special exposure problem

Open-water swimmers repeatedly put their face in the water, swallow small amounts, and may train for an hour or more. A study of Copenhagen triathletes after extreme rainfall found a 42% illness attack rate in the polluted-water race versus 8% the following year; swallowing contaminated water increased risk.1 That is an unusually contaminated event, not the expected result of every lake swim, but it makes the mechanism obvious: dose matters.

A systematic review and meta-analysis also found increased illness risk from recreational contact with ambient surface water.2 For a triathlete, the practical lesson is not to fear open water. It is to treat water quality as a variable, just like heat or lightning.

The four hazards to check

  1. Fecal contamination. Heavy rain can wash pollution into waterways or overwhelm sewer systems. Local programs often monitor indicator bacteria such as E. coli in fresh water and enterococci in marine water.
  2. Harmful algal blooms. Cyanobacteria are especially common in warm, slow-moving, nutrient-rich fresh water. Some blooms produce toxins; appearance alone cannot prove whether toxins are present.3
  3. Marine blooms and organisms. Red tides, jellyfish, and other local hazards require location-specific advisories.
  4. Physical conditions. Lightning, cold water, currents, boats, low visibility, and lack of support can make otherwise clean water unsafe.

The five-minute pre-swim water-quality check

1. Find the official advisory

Start with the state, county, city, park, or beach-management page for that water body. Look for a current swimming closure, harmful algal bloom notice, sewage spill, combined-sewer overflow, or beach monitoring result. EPA maintains state and local beach-program links, but the local authority makes the local call.4

No posted warning does not guarantee clean water. CDC notes that some harmful blooms are not visible and an advisory will not always be posted.5 Treat an advisory as a stop sign, not the absence of one as a permission slip.

2. Ask what happened upstream

Recent heavy rain, flooding, a known wastewater release, or unusual runoff should raise caution. Conditions vary by watershed, so there is no honest universal “wait exactly X hours” rule. Follow the local agency’s reopening guidance and testing rather than inventing a countdown on your training calendar.

3. Inspect the shoreline

CDC advises staying out of water that looks discolored, has foam, scum, mats, or paint-like streaks, or smells bad.3 Do not enter to collect your own sample. Keep dogs away too; animals can become seriously ill after harmful algal bloom exposure.

4. Check the whole swim course

The launch can look fine while wind pushes surface material into another cove. Scan the planned course, wind direction, boat traffic, exit points, and visibility. If you cannot see the far buoy because of fog or smoke, today is not the day to prove your navigation is “basically okay.”

5. Confirm a supported swim

Use a bright cap, tow float where allowed, a buddy or shore observer, and a route that keeps you close to an exit. Tell someone the course and return time. Water quality is only one part of open-water safety.

Harmful algal blooms: what athletes should know

Harmful algal blooms can occur in fresh, marine, or brackish water. CDC says people can be exposed through skin contact, inhalation of droplets, or swallowing contaminated water.3 Symptoms depend on the organism and toxin and can include skin or eye irritation, cough, gastrointestinal illness, headache, or neurologic symptoms.6

EPA’s current recreational-water materials support advisory programs based on cyanotoxin criteria and local monitoring.7 A home visual check cannot measure toxin concentration. If authorities advise no contact, moving your start point 200 meters downshore is not a clever workaround.

If you contact suspicious water

  • Leave the water and rinse promptly with clean fresh water.
  • Remove and wash the wetsuit and equipment without exposing pets or children to residue.
  • Do not prepare food until you have washed your hands.
  • Monitor for symptoms and contact a clinician or poison-control/public-health service as appropriate.
  • Report suspected bloom or illness through the local health or environmental agency.

What to do instead of the open-water session

The best substitute preserves the workout’s purpose.

If the goal was endurance

Swim an aerobic pool set, or use an easy bike of similar aerobic load. Do not automatically replace a 60-minute swim with a three-hour ride; that is not substitution, that is freelancing.

If the goal was sighting and navigation

In a pool, practice lifting the eyes briefly every 6–10 strokes while keeping the hips high. Combine that with deck-side visualization of the course and bilateral breathing.

If the goal was wetsuit familiarity

Use a pool only if the facility allows wetsuits, and keep the set short enough to avoid overheating. Otherwise rehearse putting the suit on, shoulder mobility, removal, and T1 steps on dry land.

If the goal was race confidence

Confidence grows from controlled exposure, not ignoring warning signs. Reschedule at a monitored venue with a partner, a clear route, and an easy exit.

Race-day water quality

World Triathlon rules require organizers to assess swim-course water quality and allow modification or cancellation when conditions are unsuitable.8 Age-group athletes should read event communications, attend briefings, and accept that a duathlon is better than a mass gastrointestinal experiment.

If the swim is canceled, adjust pacing expectations. A bike-run race starts harder, has more congestion, and removes the natural separation created by the swim. Warm up gradually, ride the first minutes under control, and do not spend the swim’s saved energy twice.

After-swim symptoms: when to pay attention

After open-water exposure, watch for vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, rash, eye irritation, ear symptoms, cough, unusual weakness, or neurologic changes. Many conditions can cause these symptoms; the swim is a clue, not a diagnosis. Tell the clinician where and when you swam and whether an advisory or bloom was present.

If several swimmers become ill, report it. Clusters help public-health agencies identify outbreaks and protect the next group.

The coach’s bottom line

Check the advisory, recent weather and spills, visible conditions, and the safety support around the swim. Obey closures. When information is uncertain and warning signs are present, move the session. Fitness comes from months of consistent work; no single lake loop is worth gambling the next week of training.

FAQ: Open-water swim water quality

Is it safe to swim in a lake after heavy rain?

Sometimes, but rain can increase runoff and sewage contamination. Follow the local agency’s monitoring and reopening guidance; there is no reliable universal waiting period for every water body.

Can I tell whether blue-green algae is toxic by looking?
