Quick answer: Check the current and forecast Air Quality Index before outdoor training, identify whether smoke particles or ozone are driving it, and reduce one or more parts of your inhaled dose: pollution concentration, breathing rate, or time outside. For a triathlete, that usually means moving hard or long sessions indoors first, shortening easy sessions when appropriate, and stopping if coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, unusual shortness of breath, or other concerning symptoms appear.
Wildfire smoke can turn a perfectly sensible training week into a bad group project: the bike wants to go outside, the run wants its long tempo, the pool schedule is inconvenient, and your lungs did not volunteer for any of it.
The answer is not to panic every time the sky looks hazy. It is also not to prove your toughness by doing threshold intervals in smoke. A smart decision accounts for the pollutant, the AQI, your health, the workout’s intensity and duration, and whether a cleaner option exists.
This guide is educational, not individualized medical advice. Athletes with asthma, cardiovascular or lung disease, pregnancy, recent respiratory illness, or a history of smoke sensitivity should follow their clinician’s plan. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or blue/gray lips or skin.
Why endurance exercise changes the smoke equation
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes inhaled smoke dose as a function of three things: the concentration in the air, your minute ventilation (how much air you breathe per minute), and exposure duration.1 Triathlon training raises the second and often the third.
During a hard bike or run, you breathe faster and deeper. During a long ride, you do it for hours. Much of that breathing shifts toward the mouth, reducing the filtering role of the nose. The 2026 EPA wildfire-smoke guide explains that particle deposition depends partly on concentration, duration, physical activity, and breathing pattern.2
A 2025 systematic review of endurance exercise and air pollution concluded that polluted environments can adversely affect cardiopulmonary health during cycling and running, while also emphasizing the need for practical exposure-reduction strategies.3 That does not mean exercise suddenly becomes unhealthy in general. It means the environment belongs in the workout prescription.
PM2.5 and ozone are not the same problem
Wildfire smoke is usually discussed in terms of PM2.5: fine particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller. EPA identifies fine particles as the wildfire-smoke pollutant of greatest public-health concern.2
Ground-level ozone is a different pollutant. It often becomes more important on hot, sunny days and can be higher later in the day. Your AQI app should identify the leading pollutant. That detail matters because smoke may shift hour by hour, while ozone timing can follow a different daily pattern.
Do not use smell as your only monitor. Some harmful pollution is not obvious, and wildfire smoke can move quickly. Use the current reading, the forecast, the Fire and Smoke Map, and what you actually see and feel.
The AQI, translated for triathletes
The U.S. AQI runs from 0 upward. EPA’s 2026 guidance uses six categories: Good (0–50), Moderate (51–100), Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (101–150), Unhealthy (151–200), Very Unhealthy (201–300), and Hazardous (301+).2
These categories are public-health guidance, not a personalized clearance system. An athlete can react at a lower number than a training partner. A long VO2 workout also creates a different dose than walking the dog at the same AQI.

The middle rows deserve judgment rather than bravado. AirNow’s particle-pollution guidance advises unusually sensitive people to consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion at Moderate AQI, sensitive groups to reduce it at 101–150, and everyone to reduce or avoid it as conditions worsen.4
A five-question decision tree before every workout
1. What is the current AQI—not just the daily forecast?
Check AirNow and, during wildfire events, the Fire and Smoke Map. The EPA guide explains that AirNow’s NowCast weights recent measurements more heavily when pollution changes quickly.2
The daily forecast helps with planning. The current reading helps with the workout you are about to start. Check again before a long session because a green breakfast can become an orange lunch.
2. Which pollutant is driving the number?
If PM2.5 from smoke is driving the AQI, shifting to a cleaner time or place and reducing intensity or duration can reduce dose. If ozone is the problem, local timing patterns and AirNow’s pollutant-specific guidance matter. Do not assume an early start always fixes smoke; inversions can trap particles near the ground in the morning.
3. Is this workout long, hard, or both?
Rank sessions by ventilation and exposure time:
- Long outdoor race simulations and hard bricks create the largest combined exposure.
- Threshold and VO2 intervals sharply raise breathing rate.
- Long easy rides keep exposure going for hours.
- Short easy sessions usually create less dose but are not automatically appropriate at high AQI.
When air quality degrades, move the top of that list indoors first. A 45-minute easy spin outside is not the same decision as a four-hour ride with race-pace intervals.
4. Are you in a sensitive group—or acting like one today?
EPA lists people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teenagers, pregnant people, and those with greater exposure among groups at increased risk from wildfire smoke.5 Athletes who are recovering from illness or who repeatedly develop symptoms should also be more conservative and consult a qualified clinician.
Your previous response matters. If AQI 80 reliably causes coughing, you do not need the chart’s permission to train indoors.
5. Is the indoor option actually cleaner?
Closing a garage door does not turn a smoky garage into a clean-air lab. During smoke events, use a well-filtered indoor space when possible. EPA recommends reducing indoor particle sources, keeping windows and doors closed when appropriate, and using properly sized portable air cleaners or high-efficiency HVAC filtration when compatible with the system.6
If the indoor air is hot, smoky, or poorly ventilated, a rest day may beat a compromised workout. Training adaptations occur over months. One ugly-air Tuesday is not the cornerstone of your season.
How to modify swim, bike, and run sessions
Swimming: the pool can be a refuge, but inspect the air
An indoor pool may be useful when outdoor air is poor, but ventilation and chloramine irritation can still matter. If the natatorium smells aggressively “chlorine-y,” your eyes burn, or breathing feels irritated, move to an easier technique session or another clean indoor option.
For an outdoor pool or open-water swim, remember that your face being near water does not protect you from smoke. Check shoreline visibility, local advisories, and AQI. Never swim open water alone, especially when smoke reduces visibility or emergency access.
Useful substitute: 30–45 minutes of relaxed technique, drills, and short aerobic repeats in a well-ventilated indoor pool. Preserve the swim’s purpose without turning it into a respiratory stress test.
Cycling: move intensity indoors before sacrificing the week
Cycling combines high ventilation with potentially long exposure. Traffic can add local pollution even when the regional AQI looks acceptable.
On smoky days:
- move threshold, VO2, and race-pace work to a trainer in cleaner air;
- shorten endurance rides rather than forcing the planned mileage;
- choose routes away from busy roads when regional air quality is acceptable;
- use recirculate mode while driving to a cleaner venue;
- do not count an N95 as permission for a hard workout.
EPA notes that a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 can reduce particle exposure when someone must be outside, but it does not filter gases, and hard exercise in a respirator can be uncomfortable. It is an exposure-control tool, not a performance accessory.5
Useful substitute: Keep the key interval structure on the trainer and reduce total duration if heat management or indoor air is poor. A fan and fluids are training equipment, not interior decoration.
Running: intensity drives breathing quickly
Running usually pushes ventilation higher than an easy ride, and there is no coasting. Move hard running indoors early in the AQI decision process.
Options include:
- treadmill intervals in cleaner air;
- an easy indoor bike session if a treadmill is unavailable;
- short strength and mobility work that does not create heavy ventilation;
- rescheduling the run within the week if the cleaner window is predictable.
Do not replace every canceled long run with a punishing trainer workout. Preserve the week’s stress budget, not merely its calorie count.
Brick workouts: protect the objective, not the format
If the objective is bike-to-run pacing, an indoor trainer plus treadmill is excellent. If no clean running option exists, ride indoors and add a short transition circuit or defer the run. One modified brick will not erase race readiness. Smoke exposure is not transition practice.
A practical workout-swap hierarchy
When the AQI worsens, use this order:
- Change the time. Use the forecast and current conditions to find a cleaner window.
- Change the location. Train indoors or travel to demonstrably cleaner air when practical.
- Change the intensity. Easy breathing reduces minute ventilation.
- Change the duration. Less time outside reduces dose.
- Change the day. Swap a quality session with recovery, strength, or rest.
- Delete the workout. Yes, this is allowed. Your fitness will remain emotionally intact.
EPA’s central exposure equation supports this approach: reducing concentration, breathing rate, or duration reduces inhaled dose.1
Symptoms that mean stop
End the session and get into cleaner air if you develop coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, unusual shortness of breath, dizziness, marked fatigue, headache, or eye/throat irritation that is worsening. EPA specifically flags coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath as reasons to immediately reduce smoke exposure.1
Follow an existing asthma action plan and keep prescribed rescue medication accessible. Seek medical care if symptoms are severe, persist after exposure ends, or are unusual for you. Do not diagnose every bad interval as pollution—but do not use intervals to argue with your lungs, either.
How to preserve fitness through a smoky week
A smoky week calls for triage, not compensation.
Keep the two highest-value sessions
Choose one sport-specific quality session and one longer aerobic session that can be done in clean indoor air. Let the rest of the week flex around those anchors.
Reduce total load if sleep and stress are poor
Wildfire conditions can disrupt sleep, travel, and normal routines. Training load is only one source of stress. If recovery markers and mood are sliding, reduce volume instead of squeezing every planned hour indoors.
Resume gradually
When air improves, return to normal training based on how you feel—not by cramming missed workouts into three days. The calendar does not issue refunds for skipped mileage, and your tendons do not accept installment plans.
The bottom line
Wildfire smoke belongs in the training plan just like heat, altitude, and illness. Check current and forecast AQI, identify the pollutant, then adjust concentration, breathing rate, or exposure time. Move long and hard workouts indoors first, respect individual symptoms, and protect the purpose of the week rather than the exact shape of one workout.
The strongest endurance skill is consistency. Sometimes consistency looks like a beautiful long ride. Sometimes it looks like closing the windows, turning on the filter, and riding the trainer while pretending the basement is Kona.
FAQ: Wildfire smoke and triathlon training
At what AQI should a triathlete train indoors?
There is no universal personal cutoff. At AQI 101–150, sensitive athletes should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion; at 151–200, everyone should avoid or reduce prolonged or heavy exertion. For long or hard triathlon workouts, moving indoors earlier is a conservative way to reduce inhaled dose.
Is it safe to run at an AQI of 100?
AQI 100 is the upper edge of Moderate. Most healthy adults may tolerate some activity, but unusually sensitive people should consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion. A short easy run and a two-hour threshold session are not equivalent exposures.
Does an N95 make cycling or running in wildfire smoke safe?
No. A properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 can reduce inhaled particles but does not filter all gases and can make hard breathing uncomfortable. Use it when exposure is unavoidable, not as permission for strenuous outdoor training.
Is indoor training always safe during wildfire smoke?
No. Outdoor smoke can enter buildings. A cleaner indoor space uses closed windows and doors when appropriate, effective HVAC or portable filtration, and fewer indoor particle sources. Check indoor conditions rather than assuming.
Should I make up a missed long workout after the smoke clears?
Usually not by stacking it onto other key sessions. Resume the plan gradually and protect recovery. One missed workout has little effect; a compressed week of fatigue can create a larger problem.
